What is the real difference between VRAI and Brilliant Earth?

One makes the diamond. The other sells it. That single structural difference explains almost every policy gap between the two.

VRAI is the consumer brand of Diamond Foundry — the site footer reads “© 2026 VRAI by Diamond Foundry”. Its mission page describes diamonds “crafted from greenhouse gas crystallized in our foundry in America using zero-emission river energy”. The catalogue is lab-grown only; there is no natural-diamond aisle.

Brilliant Earth was founded in 2005 by Beth Gerstein and Eric Grossberg and is based in San Francisco. It carries both natural and lab-grown diamonds and does not claim to grow anything: it lists loose stones supplied by others and sets them into its own designs.

That difference decides who is accountable for the stone. VRAI answers for the crystal it grew; Brilliant Earth answers for the stone it selected and the report attached to it.

Who grades the diamond, and whose report comes in the box?

Brilliant Earth takes the opposite approach. Its lab-grown diamond search lets you filter by which laboratory issued the report — IGI, GIA, GCAL or HRD — so the grading opinion always comes from outside the company selling you the stone.

Neither approach is wrong. VRAI owns every step from the first atom, so its data on a stone is more complete than an outside laboratory’s. How do returns, resizing and warranty compare?

Both run a 30-day window, and both are more restrictive than the headline suggests.

VRAI accepts returns on eligible items below $15,000 within 30 days and offers free return shipping in the US. Custom-designed and personalised fine jewelry cannot be returned at all. Resizing is one full US size at any time, but Eternity and Infinity bands cannot be resized and must be exchanged instead.

Brilliant Earth also runs 30 days and covers shipping both ways: “whether your purchase is headed to you or back to us, we cover the cost of shipping every time.” Resizing is more generous — one complimentary resizing within 60 days regardless of range, or up to a year within range. Returning an engraved ring carries a $40 engraving-removal fee.

Warranties are close to identical in substance — both cover manufacturing defects for life. Upgrades are where we cannot give you a clean answer. Brilliant Earth publishes a lifetime diamond upgrade programme, but its lab-grown coverage and credit terms have varied across its own pages — read together, those pages describe the programme both as natural-diamond-only and as covering lab-grown. A lab-grown buyer should assume neither and confirm the current terms with Brilliant Earth directly. VRAI’s upgrade credit applies toward a future purchase valued at 50% or more.

Can you see the ring before you buy it?

VRAI runs a smaller, denser network: Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and Miami in the US, plus London, Madrid and Toronto. It also recommends booking ahead and welcomes walk-ins.

Which sustainability claims does each brand actually make?

Both lean on environmental positioning, and the claims are theirs, not ours.

VRAI states that its diamonds are grown “using zero-emission river energy” and that “once crystallized, the greenhouse gas can no longer go make the atmosphere reflect heat and warm the planet”. Its certificate carries a Certified Carbon Neutral® stamp.

Brilliant Earth states that it knows “where our precious metals and gemstones come from”, publishes carbon-reduction targets and offers repurposed gold. On its lab-grown page it says it captures “CO₂ from the atmosphere” and offers collections grown with “100% renewable wind and solar energy”.

The useful distinction is verifiability. VRAI’s claim covers one facility it operates, which is narrower and more checkable. Brilliant Earth’s claims cover a supply chain of many producers, which is harder for either party to evidence stone by stone.

Who should choose which?

Choose VRAI if the origin story is the point: one American foundry, lab-grown only, a diamond that can be cut to your specification, and a company that will tell you exactly which building the crystal came out of. Custom production runs an estimated 14 business days, and ready-to-ship rings dispatch the next day.

Choose Brilliant Earth if you want a third-party grading report as standard, a showroom you can actually reach, and the option to compare a lab-grown stone against a natural one in the same session. Free shipping in both directions and the longer resize window are real advantages, and the 40-plus locations are the strongest single reason to pick it.

A third option, weighed honestly: Beyond Carat is a smaller lab-grown-only maker in the NYC Diamond District, and this is our site, so discount accordingly. Frequently asked questions

Does VRAI use GIA or IGI reports?

Neither by default. VRAI grades in house and issues its own certificate, arguing on its certification page that outside laboratories “only grade and issue lab reports”. You can request that the diamond be sent to IGI for grading, for a non-refundable fee and a two-to-three week wait.

Is Brilliant Earth cheaper than VRAI?

It depends on the grade and the day, which is why we do not publish competitor prices. Structurally, Brilliant Earth carries a wider range of colour and clarity grades from many suppliers, so its lowest available price point is usually lower — not because the stones match and cost less.

Which one is better if I want to try rings on first?

Brilliant Earth, on coverage alone. It lists more than forty US locations against VRAI’s seven US cities, and both encourage booking ahead while accommodating walk-ins.
