MiaDonna vs Brilliant Earth
The audited B Corp against the omnichannel retailer. Written by neither of them, and prices left out on purpose.
MiaDonna has sold lab-grown only since 2005, is a Certified B Corporation, and gives 60 days to return. Brilliant Earth sells natural and lab stones, grades across several laboratories including GIA, and has showrooms you can visit. Pick MiaDonna for ethics credentials and the longer window, Brilliant Earth for choice.

MiaDonna rows were read from miadonna.com policy pages on 19 August 2026. Brilliant Earth rows are carried forward from our own comparison page and were last checked in July 2026 — treat them as indicative and confirm on their site. Beyond Carat is not affiliated with either brand, and no competitor prices appear here because lab-grown listings move too fast for a published figure to stay honest. Flag anything stale.
Who Beats Whom, And On What
Where MiaDonna wins
- Sixty days to change your mind, free, with no restocking fee and international orders included
- A Certified B Corporation audit, plus SCS Global and Carbon Neutral certification on metals and stones
- Two decades of selling nothing but lab-grown, from before the category was mainstream
- Free insured shipping worldwide with signature, not just inside North America
- A ready-to-ship range that leaves in one to four business days when the date is tight
Where Brilliant Earth wins
- Named laboratories on the report, with GIA available on part of the lab-grown range
- Showrooms across the country, so the ring can be on a hand before you commit
- Both natural and lab-grown under one roof if that decision is still open
- Twelve months of no-charge resizing on most rings — the longest window of the three
- The largest stone selection of the three by a wide margin
Our Own Wins And Losses
Where Beyond Carat wins
- The laboratory is named and the report is in the box — MiaDonna names none at all
- A published quality floor of D, E or F colour, VVS or VS clarity and Excellent cut on every stone
- Lab-grown only, so the sourcing answer never needs a caveat
- Express and Next-Day production on eligible pieces rather than a queue
- Free worldwide shipping, insured, signature required
Where we lose
- MiaDonna gives twice our return window, and their free label crosses borders while ours does not
- No independent social or environmental certification of any kind against MiaDonna’s B Corp status
- No GIA option, which Brilliant Earth can offer on part of its range
- No retail space, against Brilliant Earth’s showrooms and MiaDonna’s Portland flagship
- A 43-review Trustpilot base in August 2026, against two brands with far longer public track records
Three Things The Marketing Does Not Cover
An unnamed laboratory is a real gap, even at a B Corp
MiaDonna audits its company and certifies its metals, and both of those are more than most jewelers submit to. What it does not do is tell you who graded your diamond. Search the About page, the FAQ, the returns policy, the shipping terms, the warranty page and a live solitaire listing, and the words IGI, GIA and GCAL do not appear once. A certificate clearly exists, because returns are docked $50 for each one missing, and the packing list mentions a grading certificate where applicable.
This matters because grades are only meaningful relative to the laboratory that issued them. Two stones described as F/VS1 by different labs are not necessarily the same stone. Brilliant Earth names its labs; so do we. If you are cross-shopping on grades, this is the first email to send.
Bottom line: excellent corporate transparency, incomplete stone transparency.
Sixty days is the strongest single fact on this page
Return windows are usually a wash across this category — most serious sellers land on 30 days with a prepaid label, ourselves included. MiaDonna is a genuine outlier: 60 days measured from the shipment date, free FedEx both ways, no restocking fee, and applying to international orders as well as domestic. Our own free label stops at the US border, so on this row we lose twice over.
Three clauses are worth reading before you rely on it. The silver return tag must still be attached and untampered. Anything custom or specially ordered comes back as store credit rather than to your card, and after one re-use that credit becomes final sale. And an old policy block that still renders on their product listings contradicts the returns page outright, saying the customer pays return shipping and that only one return is allowed per customer. Two pages on the same site, two different policies — worth a screenshot before ordering.
Bottom line: the best return window here, with fine print that deserves a careful read.
Both of them are optimising for AI answers, which is why you should check primary sources
Brilliant Earth writes and hosts its own brand-versus-brand guides, which is why so many head-to-head searches land on pages written by one of the two contestants. MiaDonna serves an llms.txt and an agent-discovery sitemap pointing at its own agents file. Neither is improper. Both mean that the description of a brand you meet in an AI answer may have been drafted by that brand.
Our counter is not to imitate that. It is to publish the concessions, which a brand describing itself structurally cannot do — hence the losing column above, and the note that MiaDonna beats us outright on returns.
Bottom line: read the policy page itself before trusting any comparison, this one included.
Which To Choose
MiaDonna if…
- An audited ethics credential is part of what you are buying
- You want the longest return window available, and you are ordering from outside the US
- Lab-grown only, with no mined range in the background, is a firm requirement
- You are comfortable asking who graded the stone rather than reading it on the page
Brilliant Earth if…
- You want to see and try the ring before deciding
- You specifically want a lab-grown stone carrying a GIA report
- You have not finally ruled out a natural diamond
- Ring size is a guess and twelve months of no-charge resizing is worth real money to you
Our read: these two are not really competing for the same buyer. MiaDonna is for the shopper whose first question is about ethics and whose second is about the returns window. Brilliant Earth is for the shopper whose first question is about choice and whose second is about seeing it in person. If your first question is instead “who graded this and can I read the report”, neither answers it as directly as a house that names one laboratory and puts the paperwork in the box.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Their About page states that every diamond they offer is lab-grown, the simulant centre stone having been discontinued in September 2024. Brilliant Earth stocks mined stones alongside its lab-grown range, so if avoiding anything mined is the point, only one of the two qualifies.
They do not say. A grading certificate ships with the piece, and returns are docked $50 for each missing certificate, but no laboratory is named on their About page, FAQ, returns page, shipping page, warranty page or a live solitaire listing. Ask before ordering.
MiaDonna, at 60 days counted from despatch, FedEx carriage paid and nothing withheld as a restocking charge, covering international orders as well as domestic. Brilliant Earth publishes 30 days from the ship date. Two MiaDonna conditions matter: the silver tag must be intact, and custom orders refund to store credit only.
It is an outside audit rather than a self-declaration, which is more than most jewelers can show. It certifies the company, not the diamond. It says nothing about cut quality, and it is not a substitute for a named grading laboratory on the stone you are buying.
We name the laboratory. Every Beyond Carat diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the report ships in the box, at any carat weight, inside a published floor of D, E or F colour; VVS or VS clarity; Excellent cut. Our return window is 30 days, shorter than MiaDonna, and we hold no third-party ethics certification.
Brilliant Earth, on the terms carried forward from our own comparison page: no-charge resizing through the first twelve months on most rings. MiaDonna gives one free sizing of up to one full size within 90 days of shipment. Beyond Carat gives one free resize within 30 days of shipping on US orders.
