How to Choose an Oval Lab-Grown Diamond: Bow-Tie, Ratio and Setting

Judge the bow-tie first: play the video, tilt the stone, and reject any oval whose dark centre stays black through the whole rotation. Then pick a ratio — around 1.35 to 1.45 reads classic, lower reads round, higher reads dramatic. An oval spreads wider than a round of the same weight, and its two points need protecting.

What causes the bow-tie in an oval, and how bad is too bad?
The bow-tie is a dark band across the waist of the stone, shaped roughly like its name. It is not an inclusion and not a flaw in the material. It is a shadow — specifically, the reflection of whatever is blocking the light above the stone, which in normal use is the head and shoulders of the person looking at it.
It happens because an oval is a round stretched, and stretching a round throws its pavilion facet angles out of alignment. In the elongated middle section, some facets no longer send light back to the viewer; they return a reflection of the obstruction instead. Every elongated brilliant does this to some degree — ovals, pears and marquises alike. The question is never whether an oval has a bow-tie, but how much, and whether it moves.
That is the useful test. A mild bow-tie shifts and breaks up as the stone tilts, appearing and disappearing with the angle; it reads as part of the sparkle. A severe one stays put — a fixed black band through the whole rotation, dead in every position. That is not shadow behaviour, that is light leaking straight out of the bottom of the stone, and no setting will fix it.
Nothing about this appears on the grading report. There is no bow-tie field, no grade, no measurement. A stone can carry Excellent cut and still have a bad one, which is why the video matters more here than on almost any other shape.
Why do photographs hide a bow-tie that the video shows?
Because product photography is lit to eliminate exactly the conditions that produce it. Studio lighting is diffuse and comes from many directions at once, filling in the shadow the bow-tie is made of, and the camera obstructs far less of the light than a person standing over a ring. Add retouching and a moderate bow-tie vanishes from a still image.
Motion is the diagnostic. A still frame — even a paused video — shows a shadow at one angle and says nothing about whether it moves. Play the clip at normal speed, watch the centre through a full rotation, and judge only what persists.
Which length-to-width ratio should you choose?

Ratio and finger length work against each other usefully: a longer, narrower oval lengthens a shorter finger, while a wider oval sits better on a long finger that needs no lengthening. Longer ratios also concentrate the bow-tie risk, since the more a round is stretched the further those middle facets sit from their original angles. Be stricter about the video at the high ratios.

Does an oval really look bigger than a round of the same weight?
Yes, and this is the shape’s strongest practical argument. Elongation spreads a stone’s weight over a longer outline, so more of the carat presents itself to the eye. A one-carat round typically measures about 6.5 mm across. A one-carat oval at a classic ratio typically measures around 7.7 mm long by 5.7 mm wide — visibly longer, and the length is what the eye registers on a finger.
Two qualifications. The oval is narrower than the round, so it trades width for length rather than being larger in every direction. And spread depends on how the individual stone was cut: a deep oval gives back much of the advantage, so compare millimetre measurements between specific stones.
The related advantage is price. Round costs the most per carat of any shape because cutting it wastes the most rough; an oval sits below it at the same grades, so the shape often buys both more visible size and a lower figure. The 4Cs guide covers how carat and cut interact on that point.
How fragile are the points, and which prongs protect them?
An oval has two points, at either end of the long axis. They are far gentler than a pear’s single sharp tip or a marquise’s two, because an oval’s ends are curved rather than tapered to a spike — but they are still the thinnest parts of the stone and still the first place a knock lands.
The standard answer is a prong on each point plus prongs on the sides, commonly four or six in total, with the end prongs doing the protective work. Some settings use a V-prong at each end, wrapping the point rather than sitting beside it; that is the more secure option for someone hard on their hands. A bezel or half-bezel protects most of all, and covers a little of the outline doing it.

How do ovals behave in a halo or a hidden halo?
A halo — a ring of small stones around the centre — adds real face-up width and, on an oval, does something more useful than that: the surrounding brightness competes with the bow-tie and makes a mild one harder to notice. It will not rescue a severe one. Treat a halo as flattering, never as a repair.
A hidden halo sits below the centre stone, visible from the side rather than from above. It adds nothing to the face-up size and does nothing about the bow-tie; what it adds is a detail seen in profile and a little apparent height. A legitimate reason to want one — just not the size argument for a conventional halo.
What can this guide not tell you?
It cannot tell you whether a specific oval has an acceptable bow-tie, because that is a judgement made by watching one stone move and there is no grade that substitutes for it. It cannot tell you which ratio you will prefer, since the same 1.40 oval reads differently on different hands. And it does not make a claim about what is fashionable in 2026 — the optics described here are properties of the geometry and do not change year to year, and where a trend claim would have been needed we have left it out.
