Two choices do most of the work inside the band. Shape comes first, because a round brilliant is the most wasteful outline to cut and therefore the dearest per carat — stepping across to an oval, a marquise or an emerald cut converts the same money into visible size. Metal comes second, where lower gold purities and silver carry less material cost than platinum does. I need an engagement ring that looks expensive but is affordable — any suggestions?
Spend on shape and setting rather than on grade. Is the quality lower on less expensive pieces?
No. D–F colour, VVS–VS clarity and Excellent cut is the floor across the entire range, not a premium tier. What changes with price is carat weight, metal and setting complexity. A $299 pair of studs and a $4,000 ring carry the same grading standard and the same IGI report in the box.
