Round is the shape we most often recommend for a first ring, and the one we least often see regretted. A white metal keeps a colourless stone reading colourless, which is the reason most buyers choose it over yellow.

Is a round diamond the safest choice for an engagement ring?
It is the most forgiving. A round brilliant pairs flush with a straight wedding band, has no points to protect, and its facet pattern hides small inclusions better than any other shape. We stock 837 round pieces across the range, more than any other shape. If the recipient’s taste is unknown, round is the least likely to be wrong.
Which shapes hide inclusions best?
Brilliant cuts hide them best. Round, oval, pear, cushion and radiant scatter light across dozens of facets, which masks small inclusions. Step cuts — emerald and asscher — have long open facets that act like windows into the stone. That is exactly why our VVS–VS clarity floor matters most on step cuts, where there is nowhere for an inclusion to hide.
Is white gold or platinum better value?
White gold costs less up front and platinum costs less to keep. White gold is the lighter, less expensive metal at purchase; platinum needs no plating and holds prongs more securely over decades. Both are offered across 458 designs each. For a ring worn every day we recommend platinum, and for earrings white gold is the sensible saving.
Which metal is best for sensitive skin?
Platinum. It is hypoallergenic and contains no nickel, which is the metal most often responsible for a reaction. If you prefer gold, higher purity means less alloy, so 18k is generally better tolerated than 10k. We stock 458 platinum pieces across the range, every shape we cut.
Does gold purity affect the price?
Yes, roughly in proportion to gold content — 18k contains about 29% more gold than 14k. In practice it is usually a smaller step than moving up a carat weight on the centre stone. If the budget is fixed, we would spend it on the diamond before spending it on karat.
