The effect is strongest around a smaller centre, where the proportional gain is largest — above about two carats a halo starts to read as decoration rather than as size.
What you accept in return is more upkeep. There are more stones and more settings than a plain ring carries, and a very small accent is easier to dislodge than a properly prong-set centre.
